OVER 60’S XMAS FRIENDLY

BWFC RETAIN RAY USHER MEMORIAL CUP.

A mixed 60 and 65’s team retained the Ray Usher Memorial Cup with a fairly one-sided victory against Coleshill Strollers in near monsoon conditions at Brick Kiln Lane on Tuesday 18th December.

The trophy previously nicknamed “The Biscuit Cup” was the brainchild of club member John Cassano and started life being contested between BWFC and Coleshill in a number of friendly matches played throughout the year with the overall winners taking the trophy.

During this period however, Ray Usher a member of the Coleshill team suffered a cardiac arrest at home and unfortunately passed away, so it was decided to rename the trophy in his name.

As holders of the Cup, BWFC hosted this year’s match and ran out comfortable winners by 4 goals to Nil. Coleshill rarely tested the Birmingham defence and on the odd occasion they did the dependable Keith Phipps in goal kept them at bay.

Two goals from Martin Evans and 1 each from Decka Thorp and Brendan Hartland took the trophy for Birmingham but it must be said it was a really good all-round team performance.

Every outfield player received 45minutes playing time which sometimes meant them playing in unfamiliar roles, but such is the versatility of the players in the squad it proved to be no problem at all.

The trophy was presented to John Cassano after the game and it was handed back the Coleshill with the request that Ray’s family keep it in their home until it is competed for again next year.  After the match all the players from both teams shared a pint in the club!
